Ostia Antica

We spent the afternoon in Ostia Antica, the ruins of an ancient port town outside of Rome. It is near the current airport, Fiumicino. In its hay day it was on the coast but now the coast has moved and is about 10 km inland, I suppose due to landfill being created along the coast. As in Pompeii, you can see the bath houses and their intricate fresco, forum, pubs, bakery, and other remains of their daily life. Unlike Pompeii, it's not so crowded. We went there toward the end of the day and the way they tell you it's closing is by an old lady walking around blowing a whistle. I wonder if they do a sweep to see if someone is trying to spend the night in one of the historic pubs?
