-20C

Did we mention how cold it is here? That's -5 in Fahrenheit. Our normally clear window has completely frozen over with a beautiful pattern. There is something to be said about double-pane windows.  Yuki is enjoying the sunshine from inside the house.

The "on" button

Yuki has found the "on" button to make music (the red nose). Now she can play music and dance whenever she wants to.

Oral Hygiene

Now that Yuki has two teeth, she needs to start brushing them. As always, she insists on doing it herself (and so very proud of it :) Who can resist brushing with Elmo, really? She loves her toothbrush.

Raggedy Ann

Here is another handmade gift, this is from aunt Marsha, made by Etta's friend. An American classic! I remember having one myself when I was little, and I'm guessing it was also from Marsha. I still remember visiting FAO Schwartz near Central Park and seeing a live Raggedy Ann hanging out with nearly life-size Raggedy Anns.

German cooking

Oma is writing out some recipes for us so that we can try making all the wonderful food she is serving us. I am very excited to try them. Soon Yuki will be able to taste all of this too.

Old Friends, New Friends

We visited with one of Karsten's friends. They have known each other since primary school, and had stories of playing soccer together and spent hours reminiscing. Us wives got some great stories out of each other's husbands. They also have a little baby, a baby boy named Gerrit. I guess when they are our age they can say they've known each other even longer than their papas.

First Cousins!

Yuki now has two cousins, Margit and Sophie! They are so cute. Oma is a bit overwhelmed about the idea of having to chase after three granddaughters of the same age. At the moment Yuki weighs twice as much as both of them together, but they will soon catch up. The three girls are going to have so much fun!

Hungry Caterpillar

It's reading time with Papa.   Yuki likes to hear about the hungry caterpillar eating his way through apples, pears, plums, and strawberries.

Aunt Susann and Uncle Arnd

We visited with Aunt Susann and Uncle Arnd. Acutally, soon to be mama and papa. We met in Frankfurt and had a fabulous real Frankfurter lunch together with Arnd's mom and brother. They're going to make a great set of parents!

Hello!

She is quite chatty these days. She learned this while eating her Karotten and now it's a part of her language.

Ein Vogel

Today she is a bird that can play with a ball and says no.

Cherubs

Here we are at the St. Peters Basilica in the Vatican. Can you find all the cherubs in this photo? Yuki is trying to decide who's toes these look like.

Me too!

One difficulty of traveling in Italy with a baby is dinner. Restaurants don't open until 8PM and we were never quite successful in adjusting Yuki's schedule to accommodate this. Tonight we had pizza nearby and "dessert" in the hotel room. Oh well.

Ostia Antica

We spent the afternoon in Ostia Antica, the ruins of an ancient port town outside of Rome. It is near the current airport, Fiumicino. In its hay day it was on the coast but now the coast has moved and is about 10 km inland, I suppose due to landfill being created along the coast. As in Pompeii, you can see the bath houses and their intricate fresco, forum, pubs, bakery, and other remains of their daily life. Unlike Pompeii, it's not so crowded. We went there toward the end of the day and the way they tell you it's closing is by an old lady walking around blowing a whistle. I wonder if they do a sweep to see if someone is trying to spend the night in one of the historic pubs?

Waiting for mama

Here is Yuki playing with papa and patiently waiting for mama to finish work and come out of the experimental halls in the tunnel under the mountain. She seems perfectly happy though mama says it's all an act. She is supposed to be missing mom terribly.

Assergi

This is the streets of Assergi, the village closest to the lab. It is a small village clinging onto the mountain side, with grandmas coming out to pull your collars together to make sure you're warm. What a treasure. People actually live here and drive here. You can see photos from my previous trip there here. It really is quite spectacular.

Where is my sock?

Really. Where IS my sock?

Back in Italy

And here we are, back in Gran Sasso. This is where we are working on an experiment called CUORE, about 100 km east of Rome in Italy. Last year Yuki went skiing here when she was still attached to an umbilical cord floating in nice protective warm fluid. This year she can feel the cool air and look around to see what all the commotion is about. And have her cheeks pinched. I can't think of a better place to do an experiment.

Happy New Year!

We celebrated the new year in the little village of Assergi where we were staying. There were fireworks outside and plenty of champagne to go around inside. We cooked a feast of fish (that somehow turned out more like fish sticks than anything else), paella, a spread of antipasti, and salad.
